Toddlers 12-23 mo. making messes

Hi Meghan,

I’m a pediatric occupational therapist and sensory specialist with expertise on the impact of technology on child development, and would like to comment on why toddlers aged 12-24 mo. create messes.

The job of the toddler is to move, touch and connect with other humans in order to achieve milestones necessary for early foundation skills. The toddler’s performance skill development areas are for foundation skill development are visual motor, visual spatial, motor planning, postural stability, bilateral coordination (to name a few). Achieving skill performance in these areas allows for eventual development of more advanced skills such as printing and reading.

So…although it looks like play, the toddler is actually doing very important preparatory “work”!

Give me a call or email if you’d like an interview or would like me to answer more specific questions.

Have a GREAT day!
